Terms of Service
Effective 18 October 2026
These terms are the agreement between you and VidLingo, the operator of vidlingo.io, based in Utah, United States. They apply as soon as you use the site, and in full once you sign in. We have written them in plain words on purpose; the plain words are what we mean.
The short version
- You keep ownership of what you upload. You promise you have the right to use it here.
- What you make public, including edits to public transcripts, stays public under a licence that lets VidLingo and other learners keep using and improving it, even after you leave.
- Machine transcripts and translations contain mistakes. Use them to learn, not for anything where an error would hurt someone.
- Paid plans renew monthly and can be cancelled any time; the cancellation takes effect at the end of the paid month.
- You can delete your account yourself in Settings. A free account goes at once; a paid one keeps working until the end of the month you paid for and goes then.
- We take down content when a valid copyright notice arrives, and we close accounts that keep infringing.
1. Who can use VidLingo
- You must be at least 13 years old to have an account. If you are under 18, a parent or guardian must agree to these terms for you and is responsible for your use.
- You sign in with a Google account or with an email address and a password. One person, one account; keep it to yourself. Everything done while signed in to your account counts as done by you, so sign out on shared devices.
- Teachers on the Educator plan who let students use the service are responsible for their students' use of it and for having any permissions their school requires.
- If you use VidLingo for an organisation, you confirm you may bind it to these terms.
2. What VidLingo does, and what it does not promise
VidLingo plays videos with word-by-word transcripts and translations so you can learn a language from content you care about. The transcripts come from speech-recognition engines, the translations from language models, and both can be wrong: names, numbers, slang and quiet passages are the usual victims. Other learners can correct public transcripts, which makes them better over time, but we do not check them ourselves.
- Treat every transcript and translation as a study aid. Do not rely on one for legal, medical, financial, safety or official purposes.
- YouTube, TikTok, Facebook, Instagram and X videos play in those platforms' own players under their terms; we store nothing of them. Where you ask us for a copy of another site's video, or the site has no player we can use, the copy is private to you and can never be made public, and we may refuse or remove any of them.
- We may change, add or retire features, engines and plans. If a change removes something you paid for, section 6 says what we do about it.
- The service is provided as it is. We work to keep it up and correct, but we do not guarantee that it will be uninterrupted or error-free.
3. Your content
“Your content” is anything you add: uploaded video and audio, links you paste, transcripts and translations you write or edit by hand, suggested edits, saved words and ratings.
- You own it. We claim no ownership of your content or of the transcripts and translations made from your own uploads.
- You let us handle it. You give VidLingo a worldwide, royalty-free licence to store, copy, convert, send to the speech and language engines named in the privacy policy, stream and display your content, only as needed to run the service for you and, for public content, for everyone. For private content this licence ends when you delete the content or your account.
- You promise you may. You confirm that you have every right needed to add the content and to grant this licence, and that doing so breaks no law and nobody else's rights, including copyright, privacy and publicity rights. You are responsible for what you add; we are not.
- Uploads start private. Only you can watch a private video. Making a video public lets anyone watch it, use its transcripts, save a copy and suggest edits. You can make it private again or delete it at any time; copies other learners saved while it was public may remain in their private collections.
- Media is kept for a limited time. Depending on your plan, the uploaded file is removed after 30 days (Free), after one year (Pro), or after 12 months without a play (Power and Educator). Transcripts are kept. The details are in the privacy policy.
4. Public transcripts and the contributor licence
VidLingo works like a shared notebook: the public library of transcripts and translations gets better because learners correct it, and nobody should be able to pull the pages out later. So when you make a transcript or translation public, or edit or suggest an edit to a public one, you grant VidLingo a perpetual, irrevocable, worldwide, royalty-free licence to:
- host, display, copy, adapt and translate that contribution and let other learners view, edit, export and save copies of it;
- combine it with other contributions into aggregated collections of aligned transcripts and translations, and license those collections to others, for example for research or for training speech and translation models. Such collections never include your name, email or other personal data;
- keep using it after you delete your account. Your contribution stays, your name does not: any nickname credit is removed and the work becomes anonymous.
You can choose on each hand-made transcript whether to be credited by nickname or to stay anonymous. You keep every right to use your own contribution elsewhere. The licence covers only what you actually contributed; it does not transfer the rights in the underlying video.
5. The rules
- Only add videos you have the right to use: your own, or public videos whose owner allows this kind of use. Do not upload films, TV episodes, paid courses or other protected works without permission.
- Do not add videos that are private, behind a login or a paywall, or that you reached by getting around a platform's limits. Our worker refuses those; do not try to work around it.
- Do not use VidLingo for anything illegal, or to add content that is hateful, harassing, sexually explicit involving minors, or that exposes other people's private information.
- Do not scrape the site, run bots against it, share one account between several people, open many free accounts, or get around plan limits, rate limits or security measures.
- Do not resell VidLingo, its transcripts or its translations as a service of your own, and do not use them to build a competing dataset or product without our written permission.
- Do not try to break in, probe for weaknesses, or disturb other people's use of the service. If you find a security problem, tell us and give us a chance to fix it.
We may remove content and suspend or close accounts that break these rules, and we may do so without warning when the breach is serious or the law requires it.
6. Copyright and takedowns
We respond to copyright notices as the DMCA and copyright policy describes: a valid notice gets the identified material taken down promptly, the person who added it is told and can send a counter-notice, and we keep a record of every notice.
- Each valid notice against content you added counts as a strike. Repeat infringers lose their account; in clear cases we may close an account after a single incident.
- Saving a copy of a public video that is later taken down is not a strike against you, unless you knew or should have known the video was infringing. The copy may still be removed.
- Sending a notice or counter-notice you know to be false can make you liable for the damage it causes.
7. Plans, payments and refunds
The Free plan includes the public library and 5 minutes a month for transcribing and translating your own videos. Paid plans add minutes and features; current prices are on the pricing page, and were these when this page took effect:
| Plan | Price per month (USD) | Minutes included |
|---|
| Pro | $10 | 60 minutes a month |
| Power | $20 | 140 minutes a month |
| Educator | $50 | 400 minutes a month |
- Billing. Payments go through Stripe, which handles your card; we never see the number. Subscriptions renew every month until you cancel. Taxes are added where the law requires.
- Cancelling. Cancel any time from Settings (Manage billing). You keep the paid features until the end of the month you paid for; nothing further is charged.
- Minutes. Plans and packs come in minutes. One minute covers one minute of video transcribed and translated into one language by our best AI, right away: the transcript uses 0.1 of a minute for each minute of video and each translation about 1. A translation that is ready in about an hour uses half as much. Translations are charged by the amount of text, so a video with few words uses less. The price of a request is shown before anything starts, rounded up to a tenth of a minute, and you are never charged more than that. A plan's minutes reset each billing month and do not carry over. Minute packs are a one-off purchase and do not expire. Minutes are used once a transcript has been made; a transcript that fails is not charged. If a translation you paid for with a transcript fails, tell us and we will give those minutes back.
- Refunds. If a fault on our side stopped you using what you paid for, tell us and we will refund or credit you. Otherwise payments are not refundable, except where the law gives you the right: if you live in the EU or the UK you may withdraw within 14 days of a purchase, unless you have already used paid transcription in that time.
- Price changes. We tell you at least 30 days before a price change takes effect on your plan. If you do not agree, cancel before it does.
8. Ending your account
- By you. Delete your account in Settings. A free account is removed immediately. If you have paid for the current period, your plan keeps working until that period ends and the account is removed then; your subscription stops renewing the moment you ask, so nothing more is charged, and you can change your mind in Settings until the removal happens. Unused minutes from minute packs are forfeited. When the account is removed, your uploads and private videos go with their files, your saved words, ratings, suggestions and settings go, public videos you added from links stay in the library without an owner, and public transcripts you contributed stay, anonymised, under section 4.
- By us. We may suspend or close your account if you break these terms, if a payment fails and is not fixed, if the law or a court requires it, or if we shut the service down. In the last case we give at least 30 days' notice and refund any prepaid, unused time.
- Sections 4, 9, 10 and 11 keep applying after the account ends.
9. Our responsibility, and its limits
We provide VidLingo as it is and as it is available, without warranties of any kind beyond what the law requires, including any warranty that transcripts or translations are accurate, that the service fits a particular purpose, or that it will be available without interruption.
To the extent the law allows, VidLingo is not liable for indirect, incidental, special or consequential loss, for lost profits, data or goodwill, for errors in transcripts or translations, for content other people add, or for anything outside our reasonable control. For everything else, our total liability to you for all claims together is limited to the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim arose, or 100 US dollars if you paid nothing.
Nothing here limits liability that cannot be limited by law, such as liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or your rights as a consumer where you live.
10. Your responsibility
If someone brings a claim against VidLingo because of content you added, because you broke these terms, or because you broke the law or someone else's rights, you will cover the losses and reasonable legal costs that claim causes us. We will tell you about the claim promptly and let you take part in the defence. This does not apply to consumers where the law forbids it.
11. Disagreements
- Talk to us first. Most problems are a mistake we can fix. Write to legal@vidlingo.io and give us 30 days to sort it out before taking any formal step.
- Law. These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Utah and the United States, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. If you are a consumer, you also keep the protections of the law of the country where you live that cannot be taken away by contract.
- If you are in the United States. Any dispute we cannot settle is decided by binding individual arbitration run by the American Arbitration Association under its consumer rules, in Utah or by video, each side bearing its own costs except as those rules provide. Either side may instead use small-claims court for a claim that fits there, and either side may go to court to stop infringement of intellectual property. Claims are brought one person at a time, not as a class or group action. You may opt out of arbitration by emailing legal@vidlingo.io within 30 days of first accepting these terms.
- If you are elsewhere. Disputes go to the courts of Utah, or to the courts where you live if you are a consumer and your local law gives you that right.
12. Changes to these terms
We will change these terms when the service or the law changes. For changes that affect your rights or what you pay, we post a notice on the site, and email account holders, at least 14 days before they take effect; smaller changes take effect when posted. The date at the top is the version in force. Using VidLingo after a change means you accept it; if you do not, stop using the service or delete your account before the change takes effect.
13. The rest
- These terms, the privacy policy and the copyright policy are the whole agreement between you and VidLingo about the service.
- If a court finds part of these terms unenforceable, the rest still applies, and that part is read as narrowly as needed to be enforceable.
- If we do not enforce something once, we can still enforce it later.
- You may not transfer your account or this agreement to someone else. We may transfer it to a successor that takes over the service, and will tell you if we do.
- The English text of these terms governs any translation of it.
